The 1974 Barros colheita is a very elegant 50 year old colheita port that was been bottled to celebrate the historic Carnation revolution of 1974 when Portugal progressed from dictatorship to democracy with almost no shots being fired. The revolutionaries offered carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate.

Barros translates the Portuguese character into wine, combining tradition, authenticity and modern values. Having just celebrated their 100th year trading in 2013 Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port.

Bodegas Toro Albalá, 1974

This 50 year old Pedro Ximenez sweet wine from 1974 makes a wonderul gift for someone celebrating their 50th Birthday or anniversary.
After harvesting the grapes in the month of August, with temperatures up to 45ºC, and after the sun drying process, a must was produced and, after remaining at rest for a year, went into a wooden cask. It was made in the first week of September. After raisining for 9 days and subsequent pressing, a must with a high sugar content was obtained which, after a rest period, was alcoholized before being aged in American oak casks.

“Convento Selección” are wines that have aged for generations in amontillado butts so that the wine and wood could merge with time and result into an unmatchable flavor.

This 50 Year Old Colhieta Port from Quinta das Carvalhas, was made with Port from the vast and rich collection of old Port wines found in the cellars in Nova de Gaia. The soul and body of this 50 year old is based on a tawny from 1967, a Porto Colheita from 1976 and a dash of Port from 1920, aged in oak casks. The result is a magnificent amber-coloured wine, which on the nose reveals notes of varnish and cedar leaves and an almost citrusy freshness. When tasted, it is broad and powerful, with flavours of dried fruits. It has a long and persistent finish.

Notes from Chateau Musar: A higher than usual alcohol content suggests more fermentable sugars in the grapes – something we weren’t to see again until many years later with the 2012 vintage, however unlike that year the 1974 was much more delicate in its youth and wasn’t to develop its character until a longer spell ageing in the Chateau Musar cellars at Ghazir has passed.
